As a member of Bechtel’s global international tax team you will work on a myriad of tax, human resource (HR) and payroll tax matters related to global mobility such as tax policy administration, basic tax research and documentation, preparation of tax equalisation cost estimates, coordination of vendor tax compliance services, cross-functional interface and other related support services for Bechtel’s Asia Pacific (APAC) tax group. The position includes the opportunity to learn new skills, broaden tax technical knowledge and receive training in a wide range of tax, payroll and global mobility issues encountered only in relation to a large expatriate workforce.
The successful candidate is self- motivated, works with minimum supervision, customer focussed, highly organized and able to work independently in a team environment while under strict time and geographical constraints
The position reports to and will work under the direction of the APAC Expatriate Tax Advisor, located in the US.
This is a fixed term contract for 12 months.
Duties include and not limited to:
Prepare employee tax cost estimates for international projects using licensed tax cost estimate software
Monitor international business travelers to the APAC region
Coordinate tax services, payroll reporting and appropriate notifications for international business travelers as required
Interface with international assignees and business/project personnel located in the APAC offices and project sites and report relevant information back to the global expatriate tax team
Compile summaries of country tax rules related to expatriate employees
Assist with the coordination of income tax compliance services provided by external tax service providers to expatriate employees located in the APAC region, including:
Review and update annual assignee tax return authorisation lists
Review and approve invoices, and maintain invoice tracking spreadsheet
Prepare and review status reports (e.g., income tax returns, service provider tax briefings, etc), and communicate with employees and HR where action is required
Develop and monitor tax calendars for applicable countries to ensure external tax providers are preparing tax returns as required
Process tax payments to and from tax authorities in APAC region, and advise international assignees and Payroll of amounts due and paid as required
Manage expatriate tax email box and answer basic enquiries from assignees and other Bechtel personnel
Oversee certificate of coverage process for bi-lateral social security agreements for APAC region
Maintain expatriate databases, and monitor and action statistical reports on expatriate population from databases as required
Maintain both internal and external expatriate tax webpages (“SharePoint Sites”)
Assist the expatriate tax team with special projects as they arise
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
Proficient in Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytical and problem solving abilities; works proactively on process improvement
Demonstrated administration and organisational skills and attention to detail
Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
Knowledge of tax rules pertaining to expatriates would be advantageous
Prior experience working in expatriate tax program administration with public accounting firms or industry would be advantageous (Engineering & Construction industry experience a plus)
