The Opportunity

An exciting new role has been created at Arup for a Graduate Librarian. Arup is looking for an enthusiastic newly qualified Librarian, keen to start their career off with a spring in a dynamic global organisation. You’ll be working as part of a vibrant regional team, delivering quality support to a business that places high value on knowledge.

This role will provide and support development opportunities to help you excel in your career, whilst making a valuable contribution to the business and the team. As part of this role you will also join the regional Graduate Development Program, designed to open up a world of possibilities and the opportunity to engage and network with the wider business and peers.

Get Involved

This is a developmental role where you will have exposure to all aspects of the library operations, learn to undertake business critical research, as well as developing both personal and professional skills in a diverse and dynamic global multidisciplinary engineering and design consultancy.

The role is ideally suited to a ‘self-starter’ and somebody who is keen to gain exposure to the breadth of the regional and global library offering and who will help influence and challenge the status quo. The role will require thinking outside of the box, including finding new ways to deliver library services to the region.

In addition to being a member of the regional Library team, you will also be a member of broader regional Arup University team, where you will have the opportunity to learn, share and contribute to the regional agenda, working closely with colleagues around the region.

Key Activities

Detective work

Assist staff in finding cutting edge technical and business information.

Prepare and compile valuable research outputs.

Projects, initiatives and events

Responsibility for the delivery of projects that promote the Library and Arup University, with a focus on identifying new and creative ways of thinking, operating and delivering offerings with impact.

Assisting the regional Library team with events and initiatives showcasing Library and Arup University activities.

What’s new

Preparation of media alerts, journal alerts – sharing information over a wide range of platforms including finding dynamic and new ways of reaching internal users.

Library operations

Love it or hate it library technical services are important. Given the diversity of Arup’s business, having a grasp and exposure to new material is extremely valuable. As part of this Graduate development role, there will be the opportunity to develop in this area by being responsible for the collection management function. This role will include but is not limited to:

• Buying new and interesting resources under the guidance of the regional team.

• Making them findable in the global catalogue and on the shelves – the cataloguing thing.

• Making them look snazzy for the shelves.

• Having your hands on all of the regional journals – we buy some cool titles.

• Sharing the news of the great resources that we’ve bought.

• Regionalising the set up – how great would that be for your CV!

Finding things

Whilst we have a lot of resources, we do get asked for some obscure things. Help our business find that little sparkle for their project work by co-ordinating the inter-library loan and document delivery offering for the regional team.

Selection Criteria

  • With recognised relevant degree qualifications, or as an early career professional, you will be eligible for professional ALIA (or equivalent) membership. Some experience working in a corporate or special library would be highly regarded but is by no means essential.

  • You are enthusiastic and driven to make a difference with impact.

  • Your excellent organisational and time management skills, along with the ability to prioritise work effectively and know when to refer / seek guidance, will give you the opportunity to truly flourish. A quick learner, you will adapt quickly and thrive in a fast paced dynamic working environment.

  • Being “tech-savy”, you will demonstrate high levels of experience in using social media and other communication tools.

  • Your ability to think ‘outside the box’ will be demonstrated through innovative service delivery and creative thinking to solve a problem.

  • You will be able to use your excellent communication and interpersonal skills to liaise and negotiate with, and influence staff at all levels. Working independently when required, and you’ll also be able to work collaboratively within your local team, with the capability to work with global colleagues through our various technology solutions.
