We are looking for the right person to join our Transport Planning team in our multi-disciplinary Brisbane office. We are looking to recruit a Transport Engineer/Planner with experience working in the strategic transport modelling field in consultancy and/or the public sector, with expertise in EMME desirable. The post presents an excellent opportunity for someone willing to work across a wide range of projects for both public and private sector clients. In addition to local projects, the candidate will be offered the opportunity to work on projects throughout Australia and overseas.

The successful candidate will be expected to investigate, advise and report on transport planning/engineering matters and will assist colleagues technically, and in the management of projects. There will be daily contact with other members of the Group, other groups within the office, and with clients and external organisations. The successful candidate will have sound team working, time management, analytical, and communication skills, and will have the ability to work under pressure. The candidate must be confident, a good communicator, have good interpersonal skills, and be able to work in an integrated team.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • You will work under minimal supervision within a defined area of responsibility. This may include being responsible for specific parts or managing an external project;

  • You will be responsible for checking the quality and accuracy of own and others work. Furthermore, you may be responsible for the development of others through providing guidance, training and feedback;

  • Your work will encompass authoring non-standard letters, reports and other documentation;

  • You will represent your team or group at external meetings and you may be involved in developing events, activities and internal projects of some complexity.

Skills and Experience

Technical Skills

Typical duties will include:

  • working within a project team;

  • designing, interpreting and presenting transport and travel surveys;

  • writing clear reports and presenting options and recommendations to clients;

  • using major strategic transport modelling software packages such as EMME and Cube Voyager – including experience in model development, and experience in development of scripts and macros in these packages (some experience with BSTM or similar would be an advantage);

  • using micro-simulation modelling (Aimsun/VISSUM) and intersection modelling (SIDRA) software packages;

  • interrogating transport models to forecast the effects of different road improvements, policy changes and/or public transport schemes;

  • interpretation of modelling results and contributing to development of area wide or corridor transport strategies;

  • developing and maintaining modelling skills, including the development of junior staff;

  • using statistical analysis to interrogate data;

  • developing options for testing potential solutions to transport problems;

  • evaluating the benefits and costs of different scheme options or strategies;

  • participating in public consultation initiatives;

  • managing studies and parts of projects;

  • assessing the transport effects and infrastructure requirements of new developments to support planning applications or to inform local authority development plans;

  • liaising and negotiating with different parties/stakeholders;

  • developing the initial design ideas for new or improved transport infrastructure;

  • contributing to writing bids for the funding of projects.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering, Planning, Transport or similar area;

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant industry experience in Transport and Traffic planning within a consulting business environment;

  • Excellent understanding of the transport planning environment in Queensland;

  • Ability to manage major, multi-disciplinary projects;

  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership;

  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines – and Arup’s related procedures including OH&S
