Mercer is a global market leader and we have the opportunity for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal department.

If you take pride in giving high quality, solution focussed legal advice, then this could be the role for you! Working closely with the business you will balance the commercial needs of the business with the legal requirements and interests of the various internal and external stakeholders. Your duties will include:

  • Advising Mercer and its businesses on legal matters, managing the related legal matters and advising the risk mitigants, in relation to existing products and services as well as new initiatives, in particular the online products and services in the business environment

  • Providing advice to protect Mercer’s intellectual property and optimise outcomes for Mercer under social media, consumer protection and IT laws as they relate to Mercer’s services and products

  • Assisting with projects that develop social media tools and distribution strategies

  • Reviewing contracts with service providers, including software agreements

  • Liaising with client service managers and business stakeholders as required to resolve matters and deliver projects; and

  • Contribute to a collegiate and effective Legal Team

You will have;

  • A minimum of 4-5 years legal experience obtained from a reputable legal practice or in-house legal department focussing on one or more of the following: commercial law and corporations law, intellectual property law, laws relating to social media, consumer protection and competition laws, IT laws, contract law

  • Demonstrated experience in IP & IT law essential

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills

  • Advanced negotiation skills with ability to influence business and external stakeholders at all levels in one-on-one situations or expanded audiences

  • Excellent legal document drafting skills

  • Practical, lateral thinker with ability to effectively balance long term and short term goals

  • Able to convey complex legal issues in an easy to understand format

  • Understanding of Risk Management Principles

  • Admission as legal practitioner in an Australian jurisdiction
