Position Summary

The Alexion Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a therapeutic area expert who is self-driven and passionate about sharing Alexion’s science, keen to spend the majority of their time in field and thrives when working in a highly flexible and dynamic environment. This role supports both pre-commercial and commercial Alexion therapies in Australia and New Zealand.

The position operates within a broad matrix structure and will require regular interaction with regional account managers and office based cross functional teams .

This position requires a willingness to approach both strategy and tactics with enthusiasm and a can do attitude

Principal Responsibilities

  • Serves as expert in specific therapeutic area demonstrating up-to-date and high level therapeutic expertise.

  • Identifies, creates, develops and maintains peer-to-peer collaborations and relationships with KOLs in relevant therapeutic areas within the assigned geographic region. NB: rare diseases require MSLs to proactively identify and contact appropriate HCPs and assist them in their knowledge improvement to better understand diagnosis.

  • Collaborates with physicians to drive medical affairs initiatives aligned to medical strategy including publications, advisory boards, medical education opportunities, training, and speaker development programs.

  • Develops and provides scientific presentations to HCPs in field, to provide expert medical education. Includes supporting Regional Account Managers (RAMs) by provision of on-label presentations to HCPs.

  • KOL management, strategic engagement and development, through close cross-functional collaboration with Sales & Marketing, and in particular the Regional Accounts Managers, Medical Affairs & Clinical Operations functional groups.

  • Coordinates with Clinical Development and Medical Affairs in providing field support for research studies

  • Assists in the selection of clinical study sites for Company-sponsored clinical trials, in collaboration with R&D and GCO

  • Maintains KOL profiling and visitation records for the territory

  • Nominates HCPs and provides justification for their consideration in various Medical and/or Company-sponsored activities (i.e. advisors, investigators, speakers, authors, etc.)

  • Creates and gain approval of medical presentations for use in scientific engagements with HCPs

  • Ensures compliant use of field material and conduct of activities and acts as a respected and highly regarded representative of the Medical Affairs department and Alexion

  • Serves as scientific peer-to-peer resource to disease experts in applicable therapeutic area. Supports and provides the medical community with up-to-date medical information, robust disease expertise and product information.

  • As required, trains Alexion staff on key scientific and medical topics in relevant therapeutic area, including supporting onboarding of new MSLs and RAMs

  • Takes on additional projects and responsibilities within the MSL team/Alexion as per the MSL Manager

  • Communicates expert opinions and feedback from the field on new data.

  • Provides medical and scientific input into the planning, execution and agenda content of advisory boards and works with physician experts to review speaker presentations and provide medical references where requested. Provide post meeting analysis and implementation of actions aligned to strategic objectives.

  • Responds to unsolicited medical information requests, manages and responds to questions and liaises with headquarters personnel to ensure proper response has been provided and that data is fair and balanced.

  • Reviews and assesses Investigator Sponsored Research (ISR) and medical grant proposals to determine alignment and serve as conduit for respective projects. Liaises with Health Care Professionals (HCPs) regarding application process & suitability and ongoing milestone assessments.

  • Supports the development and drives implementation of a local Medical Affairs Plan and strategy which supports best clinical practice and the overall corporate objectives

  • Supports and implements the Brand and Affiliate Company Strategy to ensure that accurate and comprehensive scientific information concerning Alexion products is available to decision makers and healthcare provider’s e.g. attend field-based calls alongside commercial colleagues, where Medical Affairs expertise is required

  • Delivers quality medical education presentations in a variety of settings and obtains valuable feedback that can be disseminated throughout the organization e.g. Staff Meetings, Round Tables, Hospital Meeting activities in collaboration with the commercial field-based staff

  • Ensures timely and informative scientific/medical exchanges with external customers and internal partners, which accurately reflect scientific data, in accordance with compliance policies and procedures as well as with legal and ethical standards

  • Supports the implementation of Medical Affairs practices to assess new indications, the treating community, patient pathways, diagnostic practices and management strategies in relevant disease areas

  • Develops and maintain an effective collaborative working relationship with the wider matrix team, including commercial field based team.

  • Solicits and share best practices to enhance team productivity.

  • Ensures compliance with all relevant internal SOPs and external regulations and guidelines.

  • Ensures MSL activities are conducted to high quality standards, delivered on time and within defined budget.


  • Qualifications in relevant applied life science degree essential. PhD, Masters Medical Science preferred.

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years pharmaceutical industry experience, preferably within medical / clinical development functions

  • Proven experience in a customer facing role within the pharmaceutical industry

  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects across functional areas, and work independently, in teams and as a sub-team lead, and drive projects to meet objectives in a timely manner

  • Experience in haematology or nephrology markets is highly regarded although not mandatory

  • Rare and ultra-rare disease experience highly regarded
