The Role

The role will be responsible for leading a sub-team of experienced broker claims advisors and the provision of technical advice and analysis of insurer carriers’ approach to claims for our clients, providing support and guidance to our insured clients and the service broker throughout a claim. Where necessary the role will involve conducting commercial settlement negotiations and escalations directly with the carrier(s) on risk with creative problem solving to drive commercial outcomes.

The successful candidate will have both proven leadership and technical abilities, to proactively manage complex claims on behalf of clients with autonomy, and influence a range of preferred carrier partners by leveraging their sound understanding of insurance products and wordings, claims processes, procedures and the legal and commercial context in which professional risk and liability claims occur. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a sub-team of experienced and legally-trained liability/professional risks claims advisors

  • Overseeing and monitoring allocated major loss and complex professional risk and liability claims, including your own portfolio of claims

  • Provide guidance and support to sophisticated corporate and professional services clients (partnering with the client service broker as required)

  • Engage with all parties to resolve professional risks coverage disputes through in-depth policy knowledge, current case law and industry practices and market trends

  • Develop and maintain solid working relationships and networks with professional risks insurer claims examiners

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships within WTW with your ‘internal clients’/stakeholders (i.e. service brokers) and service those stakeholders through collaborative and proactive reporting, and genuinely adding value and your expertise to such reporting

  • Meeting corporate and professional services clients for claims review status and strategy meetings alongside service brokers

  • Meeting prospective corporate and professional services clients with service brokers, and be able to demonstrate extensive claims knowledge and expertise

  • Meeting and liaising with specialist insurance panel lawyers and commercial litigation lawyers acting for insurers and/or WTW clients

  • Negotiate for clients with insurers and/or appointed representatives in relation to conduct, strategy and resolution of claims (including insurers’ panel legal service providers )

  • Provide claims advice for specific risks product lines to clients and internal stakeholders

  • Provide claims-specific inputs to client RFP tender processes (Request For Proposal)

  • Provide technical expertise and mentoring to assist development of Claims Advisors

  • General claims administration as required

The Requirements

  • Significant experience in insurance claims in New Zealand and/or Australia

  • Proven experience working for an insurer(s) and/or private legal practice in insurance law

  • ANZIIF qualifications and/or other relevant fields of study

  • Leadership and/or management experience, particularly with small high performing teams

  • The ability to build strong enduring relationships with clients, brokers and insurers

  • Proactive and strong customer service focus

  • Self-starter, creative thinker and problem solver

  • Able to meet deadlines and work well under pressure and very high workloads

  • Strong advocacy, negotiation and communication skills and experience in dispute resolution processes

  • Outcome-focused and not solely process-driven

  • Excellent influencing, negotiation, presentation & communication skills

  • Strong written communications skills for preparing clear submissions on coverage matters

  • Ability to effectively present your claims expertise to clients and prospective clients

  • Knowledge of loss prevention/claims mitigation techniques

  • Coaching and mentoring skills

  • Competent in Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Excel and Word

  • Comfortable with video conferencing and Skype technologies
