Mastercard is seeking an experienced attorney to be responsible for providing comprehensive, end-to-end, strategic support to the Asia Pacific based Global Processing team with a focus on its Prepaid Management Services business.
Mastercard Prepaid Management Services builds payment products and relationships with banks and non-bank issuers, merchants and other product development and distribution partners and channels to expand issuance, use and acceptance of Mastercard payment solutions, such as prepaid consumer and commercial products and program management services, including transaction processing, cardholder servicing, fraud monitoring, card and collateral design, card manufacture and card distribution.
Mastercard Prepaid Management Services manages card programs in Asia Pacific, North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Our largest market is Asia Pacific where we have programs in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea and India.

As Legal Counsel you will serve as a trusted partner to the business. The role is based in Sydney and reports to the Senior Counsel, Mastercard Prepaid Management Services (based in Sydney) who has legal responsibility for the business in Asia Pacific.
The role requires strong commercial knowledge and experience in the financial services space. The role will support initiatives in connection with product development, distribution, and issuance of payment products, including contract negotiation, risk analysis and risk management, cardholder and consumer laws and communications, marketing, and strategic partnership and general advice.
The core responsibilities of this role are as follows:
Ensuring the business is provided with accurate, commercial and timely legal services
Product development and distribution counsel, including end to end considerations.
Preparing, reviewing and negotiating card and other payment product distribution agreements
Preparing, reviewing and negotiating agreements with third party issuers, suppliers and other potential vendors and strategic alliance partners
Drafting and reviewing cardholder terms and conditions, marketing materials and other consumer facing collateral including Product Disclosure Statements and Financial Service Guides
Reviewing and providing legal advice on tender documents
Liaising with relevant departments to ensure legal and other risks have been identified and appropriate courses of action have been taken
Providing and interpreting legal information, conducting training and disseminating appropriate legal requirements to staff
Working closely with other members of the Law and Franchise Integrity (LFI) department within Mastercard where necessary (e.g. Compliance, Privacy, Regulatory, IP, Public Policy, Litigation and Employment)
Advising and assisting other parts of the Global Processing business unit and Mastercard generally in respect of various commercial and strategic projects
All About You:
Bachelor of Laws with current Australian practicing certificate.
Proven experience working with complex legal transactions at a reputable law firm, or as an in-house counsel with preference for experience in payments related financial services, product development and related regulatory requirements, and contract drafting and negotiation skills.
Ability to grasp complex new business concepts and develop and implement creative approaches to problems while identifying and balancing risks with results
Experience covering multiple jurisdictions, multiple large projects and competing priorities.
Keen business insight and strong relationship management and communication skills (oral and written) to interact confidently and effectively with internal clients, Mastercard customers and LFI colleagues, including senior management and Mastercard executives
Ability to work independently, make practical, timely and solution-orientated decisions while demonstrating sound judgment throughout.
Value add approach to both internal and external relationships, together with a sense of urgency.
Ability to multi-task and deliver in challenging circumstances while maintaining a sense of urgency
Must be a self-motivated team player and willing to take on a variety of responsibilities and roles that support the team, department and the company
Technology background and bi/multi-lingual would be advantageous.
This role is based in our Nth Sydney office, however we will be relocating all our Sydney-based employees mid 2018 into one new location at St Leonards.
