TITLE: TECHNICAL PACKAGING DESIGN SPECIALIST
REPORTS TO: TECHNICAL PACKAGING PROJECTS & DESIGN MANAGER
Under minimal supervision, designs projects for a wide variety of engineered plastic and metal related products requiring research, analysis, design and development. This position is instrumental in expediting project objectives from concept through production and includes the design, preparation and completion of all necessary documents. Manages projects and interacts with customers, suppliers and vendors to complete finished designs and product by assigned deadline and within allocated budget.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages a variety of design projects for a wide variety of engineered plastic and metal related products requiring research, analysis, design and development.
Independently evaluates, selects and applies engineering principles to develop products that are innovative and efficiently manufactured.
Prepares models, drawings and computer-aided designs working from ideas, sketches and concept drawings relating to products, parts and molds.
Creates specific product and/or mold CAD drawings required for product creation.
Works from rough customer and/or internal sketches, verbal descriptions and known manufacturing techniques. Reviews and verifies details with engineering team and customers, to allow for modifications and revisions based on detailed reviews.
Utilizes problem-solving skills coupled with creativity to meet customer demand and acceptance. Discusses concept iterations with team and customer as appropriate and incorporates confirmed changes into design/detail.
Discusses design elements with other Engineering groups, internal experts and external sources such as mold makers and vendors to ensure manufacturing process flows in an efficient, best-practice manner.
Develops Bills of Materials and Work Order requests as they pertain to the creation of products, parts and assemblies.
Identifies unique components for purchased and custom-made components for both internal and external procurement.
Works through internal and external vendor part acquisition process to ensure that unique components are purchased or custom made as necessary.
Adheres to company processes and standard operating procedures to ensure internal process control.
Ensures proper CAD related drawing standards and techniques are used to ensure departmental and company efficiencies.
Maintains high excellence in design market trends and techniques.
Actively supports Pelican’s Quality Objectives and contributes to the Quality Management System as assigned.
Actively supports and adheres to Pelican’s Safety Guidelines and actively participates and contributes to the Safety Management System as assigned.
Performs special projects and additional duties as requested by management from time to time.
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field preferred and/or a minimum of three or more years design/drafting experience in a fast paced engineering environment with an emphasis on design excellence.
Solid knowledge and understanding of manufacturing operations and processes, specifically metal forming/machining and plastic roto-moulding or injection moulding.
Experience in customer or market-driven product creation.
Must have excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
Must be detail-oriented and have excellent organizational and follow-up skills; must demonstrate a premium-level of dedication towards red-carpet customer service, and a drive towards ensuring the customers’ needs are fulfilled efficiently and effectively.
Must be proficient with Solidworks or other CAD 3-D programs, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and other appropriate software.
Must be able to operate in a fast-paced organization, exhibit excellent time management skills, and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Prompt, punctual, well-presented and respectful of peers & management; demonstrable understanding and participation in the teamwork ethic.
Must be able to interact effectively and cooperatively with employees at all levels.
Must have the ability to complete assignments within the time frame specified by the Manager.
Must be able to work overtime on evenings and weekends, with or without advanced notice.
Ability to speak and write in a second and/or third language would be well-regarded.
